Autumnal breaks at The Red Lion

As the summer holidays come to an end, children return to school (or fly the nest to uni) and the summer shorts and sandals get packed away for another year, it will soon be time to welcome in the new season. Puddles of vibrant coloured leaves will start to form everywhere you look, the days will be getting shorter and our appetites start turning to heartier, warming dishes such as stews and soups. To avoid getting the dreaded winter blues, book yourself some exciting adventures and activities to see you through the darker months.

For those visiting the area of Hampshire, whether visiting friends, attending a wedding or looking to escape for a weekend of relaxation, let us be your host here at The Red Lion, Odiham in one of our 7 en-suite luxury hotel rooms. Nominated in the Muddy Stilettos awards 2017 (Best Newcomer) and Muddy Stilettos awards 2018 (Best Boutique Stay) and to be featured in the upcoming October edition of Sainsbury’s Magazine, each of our hotel rooms come with all the mod-cons and luxuries you can think of to ensure you can travel light and leave the kitchen sink where it belongs, at home; from a coffee machine and kettle (to make your perfect cup of tea), artisan chocolate, to the fluffy soft bathrobes and ESPA toiletries, we’ve even got a selection of board games to entertain. Not forgetting the pub, full of delicious fresh, local and seasonal food and drink, just downstairs. We even cater to young families providing kids menus, travel cots, age-appropriate toy boxes to entertain, mini bathrobes and Child Farm toiletries, as well as interconnecting rooms, should your little ones not be so little and want their own space. Take a look around our website for more information on our rooms and offers.

Whilst we have wi-fi throughout the pub and inn, sometimes we all need to switch off, even if for just 24 hours, from work emails, social media and real life. Lavish in each other’s company, rekindle the art of conversation and be at one with nature. For those that can’t just switch off and are looking to fill each and every second of their day when with us, here are just a few of the many, many activities available in and around Odiham, Hampshire:

Basingstoke theatre, Anvil Arts has a cracking Autumn 2018 schedule of shows, ranging from Swan Lake and Strictly’s Brendan Cole, 80’s pop icons Tony Hadley and Paul Young, to comedy geniuses Phil Jupitus and Marcus Brigstocke; to children’s classics The Gruffalo’s child, How to Hide a Lion and Going on a Bear Hunt. Book early to avoid disappointment.

You can access the beauty that is the Basingstoke Canal from the bottom of Odiham High Street and what better way to enjoy the waterways than to get out onto it. Galleon Marine, located at Colt Hill Wharf is open 7-days a week until the end of October and if you fancy just ‘messing about on the water’ you can hire a rowboat, kayak or canoe by the hour, half or full day.

A bit of retail therapy is always a winner for the ladies and with Basingstoke’s shopping mall just one junction up on the M3 (approximately 15 minutes drive) you can shop till you drop. With shops including Zara, Apple, Marks & Spencer, Primark, Superdry, Debenhams, John Lewis at Home, a 10-screen cinema, trampoline park and a multitude of restaurants and bars you will be in retail heaven.

Take to the skies and enjoy a flying lesson at one of two flying schools located at nearby Blackbushe Airport, you can choose from helicopters or planes. Whilst you can book on the day, it is always best to book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Learn a new skill over lunch/ dinner at our sister pub The Duke of Cambridge, Tilford. Their autumn/ winter workshops include willow-weaving, jewellery making, wreath-making and much more.

There are also some wonderful historic walks and castles in and around the area, including Odiham’s very own castle and close by Farnham Castle; to slightly further afield where you have Winchester Castle, Silchester Roman City and Highclere Castle (where Downton Abbey was filmed) to explore. If you are wanting a packed lunch to head off for the day exploring, just ask Michelle and the team and they will be delighted to prepare a delicious packed lunch for you before you head off.

So as we bid farewell to the incredible summer sunshine of 2018, let’s raise a glass to exciting times ahead as we venture into the delights that Autumn will bring and be our guest here at The Red Lion, Odiham.
