The New Year glitter has settled, and the last of the mince pies have been devoured as a brand new year stretches out before you, full of possibility. It’s a time for reflection, yes, but more importantly, it’s a time for renewal—a chance to replenish your spirits and embark on a fresh start. And what better way to kick off this new chapter than by embracing connections and introducing new adventures into your daily life.
The darker months often encourage us to huddle down seeking warmth and comfort, a time for introspection and self-care; the perfect time to return to nourishing our bodies with quality ingredients that warm us from the inside. Hearty soups simmering on the stove, packed with seasonal vegetables, quality meats and immune-boosting ingredients is a simple way to achieve this (with a big hunk of fresh bread and salted butter!). It’s also important to get outside and move – walk, jog, run or bike – whatever you feel you can achieve that can be incorporated into a routine that gets you out into Mother Nature for much-needed fresh air and daylight, not only will it improve your mood and health, but it is also key for your internal circadian rhythm.
However, whilst retreating inwards during the colder seasons is important, we have a basic human need for social connection, interacting with others is essential to happiness and overall health. So, as we step into this newly arrived year, let’s all make a conscious effort to connect with the world around us, whether that be on a local, or international playing field.
Make small changes
It’s about making little tweaks that will stick, rather than a complete U-turn. Perhaps you want to inject new adventures into your life. This doesn’t necessarily mean booking a round-the-world trip (though if that’s on your bucket list, go for it!), it can be as simple as joining a local club – think hobbies, sports, and new learnings. These groups can often provide a ready-made community with like-minded people who share common interests and goals. Or, why not volunteer your time to a good cause, helping at a local school or hospice? Utilise your skillset and give your time and attention to those within your local community.
It might just be that rather than sitting at home each evening, feeling lonely or bored, you join us at your village pub to enjoy the vibes of the Odiham community; you’ll always be in good company. We host live music on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 8.30 pm and it’s free, so come and join us.
Sunday evenings (the first and third of the month) are all about our Big Village Quiz. It’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere where you can test your knowledge and, most importantly, meet new friends.
Take up a new learning
A new year is the perfect time to start ticking off those long-held dreams; learning a new language, taking a pottery class, or finally visiting that museum or gallery you’ve always wanted to explore. Make this the year to accomplish something new and you’ll be surprised how it will open new doors to a wider community.
Let’s get through the depths of the winter months and commit to nurturing ourselves, inside and out. Rather than committing to resolutions, which inevitably fall by the wayside, incorporate small tweaks and changes into your life that become your new routine. Prioritise connection and seek out new adventures and friends. Remember, your local independent pub is a vital part of our social fabric, a place that needs your support as much as you might need its warm embrace. Let’s make this a year of connection, joy, adventure, and community.
Join us at The Red Lion Pub & Inn in the heart of Odiham’s quaint market town and be in great company. Serving delicious dishes using only 100% traceable, quality ingredients to nourish from the inside out, we’re more than just a nearby place to grab a drink; your local pub is a lifeline for many, a warm and welcoming space to relax, unwind, and connect with friends and neighbours. It is a place where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and community spirit thrives… let’s keep them firmly on the high street and a hub for the community.
